Since our founding in 2018, we've been crafting decor that brings together steampunk flair, gamer party vibes, mythology, and a delightfully dark aesthetic. A New Chapter Begins

In 2025, I, Sable Balmes, am honored to step into the role of owner of Dark Ideals Decor. I've been part of this journey from the very beginning — working behind the scenes as the social media and marketing manager — and now I'll be leading the shop forward.

The previous owner, Aku, built this brand with heart, creativity, and community in mind. Aku is now stepping away to focus on family and new life goals, and I couldn't be more grateful to carry on her legacy. Under my stewardship, Dark Ideals will keep its core vision intact, even as we grow and evolve.

What's Staying — and What's Coming

All your favorites remain. I'm committed to keeping as many of the beloved original products in stock as possible — so long as making or sourcing them remains feasible.
New creations ahead. Expect fresh designs, inspired by the same dark, niche spirit you've come to love.
Local roots, global dreams. I'm partnering with other local businesses and makers to deepen Dark Ideals' roots in community and craftsmanship.

Our Heart: Community & Collaboration

Community is at the very heart of what we do. Drawing from Aku's original vision — bringing "nerdy, niche parties to life" — I also bring my own passion for community connection and local development. To honor that, I'll be launching giveaways, promotions, and collabs that spotlight and uplift our fans and neighbors.

Whether it's a gamer-themed party, a steampunk gathering, or a cozy macabre celebration, I want Dark Ideals to be a place where people feel like they belong.

Hi, I'm Sable Balmes, the new owner of Dark Ideals Decor. Though not originally born in Portland, I grew up here and graduated from ACMA before life carried me through many adventures. In 2025, I returned to PDX with my daughter — and while expecting my son — right in the middle of major life changes. Taking over Dark Ideals wasn't part of the plan, but it quickly became an unexpected blessing and a grounding force during that transition.

Alongside Dark Ideals, I run several Portland-based businesses, including Pumpkin Pie Marketing & Events and Sweet Pea's Photography. Before returning home, I founded the Wisconsin nonprofit The Mom Market, which I've since passed on to a new director, while continuing to run a Wisconsin community group called Sweet Pea. I'm also launching a new Oregon nonprofit, Raise the Justice Bar, focused on advocacy and education for youth navigating the legal system.

I'm a published author, former model and actor, and someone who is always looking for meaningful ways to connect with and support the community. Dark Ideals Decor is more than a shop to me — it's a place where creativity, connection, and storytelling come together, and I'm honored to carry its legacy forward.
